Signing contracts becomes a rote exercise for a lot of PMs, but that’s a mistake. Even if the document is coming from inside the construction project manager’s own company, it’s important for these professionals to be aware of the terms of the job and adhere to those terms at every step.
Make Use of “Soft” Skills
While good construction project managers need to have the formal and technical skills required in the field, truly successful PMs know that they can’t do a project alone. This means so-called “soft” skills relating to interactions with other people, like the ability to negotiate or give clear instructions, are key to success. Knowing when to delegate tasks to specific construction team members, how to clearly communicate a timeline to the client and even how to get on a supplier’s good side for better service can all make a big difference in how smoothly a construction project runs from beginning to end.
Organize and Schedule Carefully
Few construction project managers have the luxury of only having one thing on their plate at a time. This makes staying organized and on top of one’s schedule essential for success in this field. Knowing when and where to respond to emails, schedule client meetings, get in touch with construction foremen and take care of all these various minutiae throughout the day allows project managers to stay focused on the task at hand and do a good job of whatever it is they’re focused on at the moment. Splitting your attention can actually reduce the quality of your work significantly, so getting the job right means project managers can’t neglect the management of their own time.
Play an Active Role
Getting updates from managers and foremen on the jobsite can be useful when a PM absolutely cannot make it out to that particular site on that particular day, but this shouldn’t be the norm. Construction project managers need to be hands on, visiting the site on a regular basis and actively checking to make sure plans are being carried out to the letter. Being on the site can also help ensure safety protocol is being followed to ensure safe, efficient jobsite operation.
